Terrorism in an Actuary's world

Pool Reinsurance is the UK's government-backed terrorism reinsurance mutual. Since the failure of the market in 1993, Pool Re has ensured the continued availability of terrorism insurance, currently underwriting over £2 trillion of exposure in commercial property.

Steve Coates is Chief Underwriting Officer and a member of the Executive management team at Pool Re. Steve has responsibility for all aspects of underwriting and claims, as well as actuarial including exposure management and modelling.

​

In this talk, Steve discussed the evolution of the scheme over the years in the broader context of the insurance, security and political landscapes. He also considered some of the actuarial and modelling challenges faced in evaluating and quantifying terrorism.
